We acquire the businesses that already built New England.

Stone Mile Capital buys and operates essential, founder-led businesses from owners ready to retire, holds income real estate in New England's highest-demand markets, and recruits the operating leaders who run all of it, for the businesses we own and for owners who aren't selling at all.

Why the name

A stone mile marker doesn't move.

New England's old road markers were cut from granite so they'd outlast whoever set them. That's the posture we bring to acquisitions: durable capital, a fixed point an owner and their team can build the next chapter around, not a waypoint on someone else's route to an exit.

Approach

Capital that plans to stay, led by the people who run it best.

Most buyers optimize for the close. We optimize for the decade after it: the customers, the crew, and the name on the building.

Stone Mile Capital is a single, permanent pool of capital, not a fund with a clock running. We buy a business and back it for the long run.

Our strong preference is to evaluate the existing team first and promote from within. We install new operating leadership only when necessary, rather than defaulting to a team we bring in from outside.

That matters most to the owners with whom we speak. Most have spent meaningful years building something that isn't easily reduced to a multiple of EBITDA or cashflow, whether that be a reputation for unrivaled customer service, or a loyal team that customers know by name, or perhaps even relationships with lenders, manufacturers, and regulators that took years to earn, or simply the trust of a community that's watched the business grow up alongside it.

We're not assembling a roll-up or preparing a business for a quick resale. We're looking for businesses to run well, for a long time.

Investment criteria

What we're looking for, specifically.

If most of this describes your business, the conversation is worth having, even if a detail or two doesn't fit.

GEOGRAPHY

New England and Greater Northeast

Current asset base clustered in Massachusetts. Boston-area businesses preferred, not required.

SECTOR

Essential operating businesses

Off-market, non technology-focused operating businesses with real, defensible customer relationships: the kind New England already depends on.

SITUATION

An owner ready for a change

Retirement, a desire to bring on a partner, or simply readiness for what's next. When a sale leads to a transition, we prefer a short, defined handoff period.

STRUCTURE

Majority control, with flexibility

We typically seek majority or full ownership at closing, or a clear, defined path to get there. In select situations, we'll deploy capital as a large minority investor with meaningful governance and investor rights.

Real estate

A second holding pattern: demand that doesn't take a season off.

Stone Mile Capital holds rental real estate chosen on the same logic we apply to acquisitions: proven demand, not demand we have to create.

We focus on two kinds of markets: dense, walkable suburbs where renters need to be near a city's jobs regardless of the calendar, and vacation destinations with genuine three-to-four season demand rather than a single ten-week peak.

High-density suburban rentals

Long-term rental housing in walkable, transit-accessible suburbs just outside major New England metros, where demand is driven by proximity to jobs and schools, not by any single season.

  • Steady, non-seasonal occupancy
  • Professional and family tenant base
  • Constrained supply near urban cores

Four-season vacation markets

Coastal and lake-town properties in destinations that hold demand across three or four seasons: shoulder-season travel, long weekends, and off-peak stays, not just a short summer window.

  • Diversified booking calendar
  • Blend of short- and long-term hold options
  • Selected for durable, repeat-visitor appeal

Real estate is a separate, standing part of what Stone Mile Capital does, underwritten with the same discipline we bring to every acquisition.

If you own a rental property in one of these markets and have ever thought about selling, whether now or down the road, we'd welcome a conversation. We move efficiently, keep things confidential, and only pursue something if it's of mutual benefit.

Process

What to expect.

Every deal moves at its own pace. This is the shape of the road, not a rigid script.

Mile1
Introduction

A confidential first conversation

No brokers required, no obligation. We talk about the business, your goals for a transition, and whether there's a real fit, usually within a week of first contact.

Mile2
Alignment

Indication of interest

If it makes sense on both sides, we put a preliminary structure and range in writing, in plain language that doesn't require a legal team to read.

Mile3
Diligence

Focused, respectful review

We do our own financial and operational work, directly, with limited third-party involvement. We aim to be efficient with you and your team's time.

Mile4
Close

Definitive agreement & closing

Financing, legal, and closing logistics are handled with a small, consistent team... the same folks you spoke to on day one.

Mile5
Transition

A transition, or a genuine partnership

When ownership changes hands, we plan the handoff in advance: timeline, communication with the team, and however much involvement you'd like to keep. When we're structured as a partner instead of a full buyer, that planning looks different, but the standard is the same: clarity going in, and no surprises after close.

About

Operator-led, not committee-run.

SM

Stone Mile Capital is led directly by its founder, based in Southern New England, with a background in operating-company finance, most recently as a chief financial officer overseeing multi-entity operations, and prior to that in private equity backed operating roles.

That background shapes how we underwrite. We read a business's financials the way an operator does, not the way a spreadsheet does: inventory turn, staff throughput, fixed-and-variable absorption, the things that actually predict whether a business is healthy.

We're not a large firm, and we're not trying to become one. Businesses run well, not businesses accumulated, are the goal.

Recruiting

Three practices. Two are investments. One is open to anyone.

Acquisitions and real estate are how Stone Mile Capital invests, and both stay New England focused. Recruiting is different: a standalone practice, open nationwide, whether or not a deal is ever on the table.

Stone Mile Search places the general managers, controllers, and department leaders who actually run essential operating businesses. Many owners work with us here first, on a single search, and choose to partner with us later on an acquisition or investment. Others simply need the hire and nothing more, and that's a complete relationship on its own. Every search is handled with real discretion: our recruiting work is kept separate and confidential from our acquisitions activity, so working with us here never puts you at a disadvantage if we're ever also looking at your business.

Operating leadership placement

General managers, controllers, and department leads for owner-operated businesses, sourced from the same network we use to staff our own acquisitions.

  • Confidential, direct-sourced search
  • Candidates vetted by operators, not recruiters alone
  • Built for founder-led, non-tech businesses

Succession bench-building

For owners who aren't selling: help identifying, hiring, and developing the person who can eventually run the business without them in the room.

  • No transaction required
  • Works alongside an existing leadership team
  • A first step toward, or an alternative to, a sale
Why one company

The search expertise is real, and it's in-house.

Our team has worked inside the world's largest professional networking and recruiting software company, alongside the people who built its search and matching technology, led searches at a dedicated recruiting firm, and personally owned and operated one. Stone Mile Search isn't a favor we do on the side of the acquisitions business. It's a genuine third practice, with genuine depth behind it, and unlike the other two, it isn't limited to New England.
